[Toy Review] HARLEY QUINN (NOMURA VERSION) - Variant Play Arts Kai

Sorry it took a very long time to post this review of the Variant Play Arts Kai action figure of Harley Quinn. I have this figure near the end of 2018 and been carefully reviewing this figure for months. This version of Harley Quinn is designed by SQEX's character designer, Tetsuya Nomura. And this is what SQEX call a "Transforming Action Figure". Woah! That's very interesting and scary (for a pricey action figure) at the same time.

PACKAGING

Front of the box
Harley Quinn's packaging design is similar to Batman's (Nomura Variant). It's a windowed box, so you can already see the action figure and it accessories in front. The graphical design of the box have a lot of dark and neon colors and it looks kinda futuristic gothic-ish.

Back of the box
The back shows more product shots and poses of Harley Quinn. You can also read her story at the back which I wish SQEX make their own DC Universe video game or short comic book series featuring these characters.

She's ready to heal or cause injuries.
Packaging includes:
- Harley Quinn figure
- Alternate face
- Submachine gun
- Armor Pieces (head, chest, collar, skirt piece, L/R arms L/R legs)
- Transforming armor storage/giant syringe (in 4 parts)
- Right hand with syringe
- Trigger right hand
- Pair of normal gripping hands
- Pair of armored trigger hands
- Pair of armored open hands
- Display stand (action figure)
- Display stand (clear)
- Instructions (I recommend that you read this)

THE FIGURE

This figure have a decent height, it's kinda light too. This figure is very presentable and will stand out in my collection of figures that's wearing a lot of dark colored clothing.

Checking out Harley
In my (kinda biased because I like Harley Quinn) opinion, I think this is one of the best Harley Quinn designs along with the Classic, Arkham Knight and Injustice (video game) designs. Harley is wearing her nurse outfit as a default. She also looks like she can fit in easily with the rest of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts characters because Nomura designed her.

She still looks cute even when blindfolded.
The face sculpt looks good. I don't know why Nomura put not one, but two blindfolds (red and black) that covers the top half of her face, "love is blind", I guess. The lips are painted red very well. Her face is whitier because of her makeup.

Harley got lots of earrings.
Harley have three gold earrings on both of her ears.

As a standard design, Harley's blonde hair have long twin tails. No other hair colors applied, it's just blonde with nice shadings and sculpt.

Would you trust a nurse with that hat?
The nurse hat looks cute having that smiley face with a devilish smirk. The smiley have red and black eyes.

Harley's Nurse outfit.
Harley looks good and sexy in her nurse costume. Her costume is a mix of that of a nurse and a gothic chic because of her corset that is half-red, half-black in color. The white sleeveless top have a cut that shows some of Harley's cleavage. The corset have nice details and it's painted really well.

Backside Harley
The back shows some more skin and that's about it.

If you look closer. The normal Harleen Quinzel wears eyeglasses.
The ID on her costume is well printed. You can kinda see Harley's normal face in the ID picture.

Right arm
Both arms are asymmetrical in design. The right arm shows more skin and the right hand have shorter red glove.

Left arm
The left arm have longer red gloves that extends to the bicep and the left hand have a black glove. Both arms have a ruffled band on the biceps.

The skirt
Harley is wearing a very short white, almost transparent skirt with red and black parts that looks like paddings that are part of the corset. The paddings have small diamond shapes.

Wow, she really like to cure or harm others with those syringes.
The belt looks nice and got a set of syringes in the holster.

Wowza!
The front skirt piece is removable and you can see the front of her very detailed and sexy undergarment which is a fan service especially if you look at her glorious rear which I will not show for you guys because it kinda falls under NSFW territory.

Both legs looks nice it got a very good skin tone. Harley's right and left leg got red and black boots and stockings respectively. Also, both stockings have different design and goes up to Harley's lap. The red one have black diamonds for design...

...and the black one have lots of linings/seams.

These boots are elevated.
The right and left boot have similar nice looking design but the colors are different, red and black. The shoelaces are painted well. There are a couple of silver studded plate buckle on the boots.

ACCESSORIES

Being a transforming action figure, this Harley Quinn have a lot of accessories. She got her armor set that have 8 parts: head, neck, chest, skirt (front piece), arms, legs. She also got an alternate face sculpt that goes for her head armor. For extra hands she got a total of 8. For weaponry, she have her giant syringe/giant mace or mallet and her submachine gun

So many stuff!
She got a lot of accessories but mostly interchangeable parts, no other kind of stuff like weapons and other fun accessories for her to play with. I wish she got an alternate normal un-blindfolded face too.

I don't know what that gun is. Anyone know?
Armored and Nurse Harley can hold this.
The submachine gun looks a standard gun. It doesn't have any futuristic design that the rest of the weapons the Batman (Nomura Variant) characters have. It looks good though and very detailed.

3 out of 4 parts of the giant syringe.
You need to assemble these parts to make the giant syringe. There are 4 parts: plunger (the one with a ring shape), barrel (main body/armor storage), barrel part (stylish design part that looks like a couple of gun hammers), and needle.

The barrel have the armor set attached on it.
Huh, the armor looks like a heart here.
The barrel (or main body) of the syringe is also used to store Harley's armor which she can use as giant mace/mallet to whack her foes. This is pretty heavy and requires a stand made specifically for this weapon.

That's a very massive looking mace/mallet!
Nurse Harley can only hold this.
This is what it looks like if the syringe is in armor storage mode or mace/mallet mode. This mode only uses two parts, the barrel and the needle parts of the syringe.

Who wants to take a shot from this big thing!?
Armored and Nurse Harley can equip this.
If you remove the armor pieces, you can combine all 4 parts to make the giant syringe that have gun metal and silver paint application. This weapon looks awesome. I always like to think that this is like Variant Harley's version of her bazooka or rocket launcher. It also look like a high caliber rifle that uses slugs or huge bullets.

Harley's combat armor
This is Harley Quinn's set of armor. They're colored red/black/chrome and mostly have glossy finish. This is one of the reason why this review took so long to finish in addition to my sudden laziness, sorry about that. Anyway, It's difficult to take some of them off the syringe's barrel but once removed, it's easy to store them again on the syringe or equip the armor parts to Harley. You will see the armored Harley in action in the ARTICULATIONS section.

Reminder: Refer to the manual of this figure if you want to swap its parts especially if you don't want to break something.

Those eyes look pretty.
To accompany the armor set, SQEX provided an alternate face sculpt that goes behind the helmet's visor. The face sculpt looks good and shows Harley's blue eyes surrounded with eye shadows. The mouth is covered with a mask which makes sense because the helmet's visor doesn't show the mouth. Still, I wish SQEX made another face sculpt that fully shows Harley's face.

It also looks similar to Deathstroke's mask if you change the color scheme to orange/black.
The helmet looks good. The visor area is white with the right eye being clearly visible and the left eye is kinda visible but it's protected by a red translucent glass. There are some silver parts underneath the helmet's "ears" or "twin tails" that also have diamond shapes for design. Swapping this is kinda tricky and scary because you need to remove the neck part and the head part and you have to disassemble the default head too. You'll understand if you have this action figure too.

This will only protect Harley's upper torso.
The chest armor looks simple and very easy to equip. First you must remove the head then remove the ID and then slide the armor to the neck and put the armor's tab on the hole where the ID was when it's equipped.

Collar and skirt piece
This is the collar piece and the skirt piece. To equip the collar, you need the chest armor equipped first then slide the collar on the neck and connect the collar's tab on hole of the chest armor. To equip the skirt piece, just pull the default skirt piece down ( ͡° ͜Ê– ͡°) then replace it with the armored skirt piece.

Left and right armored arms
Both arms of the armor set looks really cool. The right arm is mostly red while the left arm is mostly black in color. The shoulder guard have hinges so that you can raise them above the shoulder to cover the ball-hinges. The red one moves well but the black one is kinda stiff and can't be raised up to the shoulder. To equip the armored arms, just pull the shoulder ball-hinge off the figure then attach the armored version.

The armored legs
The design aesthetics of the leg armor and color application is similar to the arms. There are chrome parts on the upper end of the leg armor. The heels on the feet are folded when stored on the needle. To equip these legs you need to pull Harley's legs then replace them with the armored ones. It's kinda difficult to remove the default legs because they're tight.

The feet of the armored legs
The heels are hinged so that you can pull them back to flatten the heels making armored Harley to stand properly.

Extra hands: normal and armored
These are the 8 extra hands. Four of them are for the default nurse look while the other four are for the armored mode. The normal hands looks very simple with just red for right hands and black for left hands. The normal pair of gripping hands are for holding the huge mace/mallet weapon.

The armored hands are detailed and the nails are really sharp looking. These hands have Harley's three-diamond logo. By the way all trigger hands have a very tight grip making it hard to hold the submachine gun. You need to use force so that the gun's grip can slide on the trigger hands.

Hand holding a syringe.
This extra normal right hand is holding a syringe in case Harley have to administer a drug or whatever to someone. The syringe is detailed and painted metallic silver.

Clear stand
If you're planning to pose Harley with the armor mallet which is a heavy weapon, you'll need this clear circular stand with ball-pegged rods.

Display stand
Need more help on balancing Harley when doing some really insane action poses, then use this display stand. Well you can use better display stand alternatives.

ARTICULATIONS

"Inmat-- *ahem!* patient (insert name here), this way, please... ufufufu."
Variant Harley Quinn have the standard Play Arts Kai set of articulations making her very poseable especially having that very slim body. Slim type PAK characters tend to be more flexible in posing than bulky characters.

"*Gasp* Oh my!"
The head is on a double ball-peg. Harley can look around really well. The neck is on a double-ball peg too giving more range of motion for the head. Neck articulation is hidden thanks to the collar. The twin tails are articulated, they can only swivel.

"Oh, you want little ol' Harley to heal your seriously sad sadness to lots of fun, permanent laughter?"
The arms have ball-pegged shoulders, elbows and wrists which moves up and down, bend and swivel really well and the whole arm can go forward nicely because of the soft chest piece. The biceps can swivel and these articulation is hidden thanks to the black ruffled bicep bands.

Drawing a syringe
"Hmmm... well you look really stupid sick so I guess it can't be helped ufufu."
The upper torso (chest) movement felt a little restricted because of the tighter chest piece. Still it can move side to side and twist without exposing any gaps.

"Well then, ready to smile?"
The waist articulation is hidden under the skirt which is nice. It got a decent range of motion.

Aiming her submachine gun
The legs can go up forward really well and a little (few clicks) to the back. They can raise to the side really high for high kicks and stuff. They can also twist and have a hidden thigh swivel for more leg movement range.

She's not messing around.
I'm using the clear stand to stabilize the weapon.
The knees are ball-hinged, a good option for slim-legged characters. The knees have a decent bend and you can also use these to swivel the lower part of the leg.

Crouching for more accurate shooting.
The elevated boots are ball-hinged. They can point up and down well and can also swivel and pivot side to side.

"Battle Mode Activate!"
Now for the armored version. The articulation and movement range are almost similar to the default version. The head can look around really well. And the chest and waist articulation movement remains the same.

"Who wants some of this!?"
By the way, she really cant hold the giant syringe properly.
The arms also have ball-hinges on the shoulders, elbows and wrists but they don't have bicep swivel, well the can swivel by using the shoulder ball-hinges.

Deadly aiming
The legs moves also the same. The only difference is that the knees have double-hinges instead of ball-hinges. The double-hinged knees looks good because of the armored kneecaps, plus they have a nice range of motion. The feet are ball-hinged but have limited movement when pointing up and down because of the bulky armored feet.

SCALING

Having two versions in one figure is kinda difficult for a size comparison so I will use this photo of the Armored Harley only one time with Batman and Catwoman both designed by Nomura as a template for comparison. Note that the Armored Harley is a little taller than Nurse Harley.

The DC Variant characters designed by Nomura.
As you can see Armored Harley is about the same height as Catwoman (Variant) and she's shorter than Batman (Variant).

Take two, this time with Nurse Harley.
Nurse Harley is a bit shorter than Catwoman (Variant) and Batman (Variant). The scaling comparison of both versions of Harley with the rest of the Nomura Variants is really good. From this point on, I will use Nurse Harley to compare her height with the rest of the PAK figures in my collection.

The look like sisters.
Here you can see that Hatsune Miku (Variant) which is also designed by Nomura is shorter than Nurse Harley.

Two Harleys from different Earths
Harley Quinn (B:AK) is half-a-head shorter than Variant Harley.

Harley with random characters
Raiden (MGR) is taller than Harley while she's the same height as Lara Croft (RotTR). Leon S. Kennedy (RE6) is super short.

The Colorful Crew
Harley is the tallest in this group pic that includes Sora (KH3D), Riku (KH2), Serah (FFXIII) and Lightning (LR:FFXIII).

The Dissidia Team with Harley
Lightning (Dissidia), Terra (Dissidia) and Squall (Dissidia) are all shorter than Harley. Still a decent height comparison.

Harley with the people from Ivalice.
Fran (FFXII) is a little taller than Harley thanks to her high heels. Gabranth (FFXII) is also taller.

With the people from Gaia (the Planet)
This is surprising, Harley Quinn, Cloud (FFVII:AC) and Tifa (FFVII:AC) almost have the same height ignoring Cloud's spiky hair. Barret (FFVII:AC) and Cid (FFVII:AC) are both taller than Harley. Cait Sith is obviously the shortest here.

Harley with the other two main heroes of and villain of FFVII
In this pic with Sephiroth (FFVII:AC), Zack (CC:FFVII) and Vincent (DoC:FFVII), Harley is the shortest this time.

Harley hanging out with the citizen of Eos and Hydaelyn
Huh, Harley have almost the same height as Aranea (FFXV) and Noctis (FFXV). Cindy (FFXV) and Lunafreya (FFXV) are both just a bit shorter than Harley. Nanamo (FFXIV) is there just for fun.

As you can see Variant Harley's height is passable with the majority of larger scale PAK figures which is awesome.

QUALITY ISSUES

There are some quality issues but most of them are minor like factory paint scratches and accidental scratches when equipping the weapons especially the submachine gun. It may not be noticeable but some parts are not accurately printed/painted like the logo on the right red stocking. The shoulder armor of the left armored arm is very stiff, I think forcing the part to move might break it.

CONCLUSION

In the end, this is an amazing Play Arts Kai action figure version of Harley Quinn. This Variant PAK figure is very cute and sexy. Very presentable too and her colors compliments my work area. Her colors are the reason why I bought this figure because I like red, white and black colors. Anyway, she's very poseable too, Nurse and Armored mode. She got a large amount of accessories but most of them are interchangeable parts that's why she need more actual accessories for her to use. The amount of interchangeable parts makes me want to buy another one of this Variant Harley so that I can display both her Nurse and Armored versions. And because of the accessory count, this figure's price is very high. Variant Harley is the most expensive PAK figure in my collection so far. But it got it on sale so it doesn't hurt me much financially. So if you're a fan of Harley Quinn, Tetsuya Nomura, Final Fantasy or all of them, better get this action figure. There are some stores that still have this on stock.

Catwoman and Harley Quinn teaming up

The only thing's missing in the pic above is Poison Ivy to complete the Gotham City Sirens. Make it happen, SQEX and Nomura, please.

[Update 05.22.2021] Added new Variant Harley Quinn photo edit.

Nurse Harley with a big gun.

Harley Quinn, armed with a big machine gun, is ready to take make it rain bullets on the enforcers.

She is holding my Custom-painted (Harley Quinn-themed) MK46 Mod 0

Cheers and Happy Collecting!
