[Toy Review] DEUNAN KNUTE - Appleseed Alpha Play Arts Kai

She's a mercenary along with her cyborg partner. They're both inseparable and helping each other to survive in a post apocalyptic world. She's Deunan Knute from the 2014 CG movie, Appleseed Alpha. I got her Play Arts Kai action figure to review. This is a 2nd hand action figure that's in great condition and with complete accessories so this is going to be treated as brand new for this review.

"You may be a damn good cyborg... but you're not a robot."
~ Deunan Knute ~

PACKAGING

I bought this figure without a box unfortunately, but I got some pics of the box. I forgot the source of the photos, I think I got these pics from eBay.

Front and back of the box.

This is a coffin-type box. The front cover shows a large product pic of Deunan at the ruins of Time Square along with lots of brand logos. The back shows more of Deunan's product shots and a preview for Briareos PAK figure.

Front cover opened.
Open the front cover to view the accessories through the viewing window on your right hand side. You can read some texts on the left hand side which is the back of the front cover.

Ready to do a mission.
Packaging includes:
- Deunan Knute figure
- Assault Rifle
- Handgun
- Knife
- Pair of fists
- Trigger right hand
- Gripping left hand
- Display Stand

THE FIGURE

Like I said earlier, this is a 2nd hand action figure and in great condition. Now I got two 2nd hand PAK figures, MGR Raiden is my first.

Looking at Deunan at four sides.
The action figure of Deunan looks really good on different angles and almost accurate to its movie counterpart.

Deunan got a pretty and shiny face.
The face looks nice and about 90% accurate to the movie which is really good the remaining 10% goes to the anime-ish look. The face have very good paint application but the skin is glossy. It's like she washed her face. The hair also looks nice and just like the face, glossy. Overall the head is sculpted, painted and shaded really well. I'm not a fan of the glossiness.

Deunan's mercenary getup.
Deunan wears a futuristic military (or mercenary) gear that have a lot of straps and padding. The gear or the protective jacket is really detailed and textured to make it feel and look like it's rugged and worn out. It's painted really well too. She's wearing a white top underneath the gear. Her boobs are larger in this figure which is nice to some, but I prefer it to be accurate so the boobs of this figure must be a little smaller. Her belly button is exposed and the skin tone is nice, but it's glossy just like the face.

Deunan's back
The back shows more of the gear's protective padding. The two lower straps of the harness is a separate glued pieces that can adjust when you pose the figure which is really nice.

Rabbit Emblem. I don't know what the L and R stands for... Left and Right?
The back also shows a nice print of Deunan's emblem. It's a rabbit emblem. What's cool is that I re-watched the movie to see the accuracy of this emblem. Well I'm glad to say that the scratches on it are accurate now that's attention to detail.

Right arm
Both arms looks different. The right arm have a very long black sleeve. I don't like how the wrist ball-hinges really exposed like that.

Left arm
The left arm have an elbow pad and some weird sleeves like the ones that athletes wear on different parts of their body kinda like a muscle support. The hands have cool looking gloves that are fingerles on the pointing finger and thumb.

The stealthy black wristwatch.
Deunan is also wearing a wristwatch on her left arm. It got details, but it doesn't have any color, it's just black. I guess I will apply some paint on it someday.

So many pouches!
Deunan have lots of black pouches that circles around her waist. They have wrinkles for detail and it got greenish brown paint scratches.

Gun holster
There's a handgun holster at the back of her waist. It's detailed with some rivets and the gun can really fit in it without falling off thanks to the strap.

Gun secured in the holster.
The strap is really soft and knowing PAK removable gun holster straps, they don't tend to snap back. So I just inserted the handgun into the holster and just adjusted the strap to the grip to secure it.

Camo pants... I don't know the camo color.
Deunan is wearing camo pants. The patterns of the camo looks really nice. The pants have wrinkles, stitches and seam lines for detail and got some large pockets. The kneepads looks nice too and got lots of paint scratches.

Deunan's rugged boots.
The boots looks different from the standard military combat boots. It got lots of straps that I think it makes it a hassle to wear them. But it looks cool on a design perspective. The boots are just black but highly detailed.

Knife sheath
The left booth have a knife sheath that's secured by the boot's straps. It's not noticeable because it got the same color as the boots. I wish it's colored brown or something that's noticeable and consistent to the figure's color palette.

Combat Knife kept within the sheath.
The knife fits very well on the sheath. It won't fall off when even you turn the figure upside down.

The boot's bottom outsole.
The bottom of the boots are threaded too for detail.

ACCESSORIES

Deunan have a nice amount of weapons for her survival in a post apocalyptic world. She got an assault rifle, a handgun and a knife. She got four extra hands.

All of Deunan's stuff.
While this is a good amount of accessories for the figure, it only lacks some grenades. I also wish they included Deunan's multi-purpose (night vision/binoculars) goggles.

Assault Rifle
I don't know the name of this assault rifle but looks really good. It got a lot of detail and have dry brush paint applied to make it look like it's been used a lot.

Handgun
The details and paint application is the same with the hand gun. Both guns looks really cool but they need some more color like metallic silver or some browns.

Combat Knife
Deunan also got a knife just in case she ran out of or just want to conserve some ammo. The grip detailed and it's just black with some dry paint brushes. The blade is metallic silver.

Extra hands
The extra hands looks good and detailed. The pair of fists are used for punching stuff. The trigger right hand can hold the assault rifle and the hand gun. The gripping left hand is for the knife. They hold the weapons really well.

I got the figure's standard issue PAK display stand. My first 2nd hand PAK figure doesn't have one. So even though I'm lucky to have the stand, I'm still not gonna use it. I didn't even bother taking its pic because the parts has been removed from its blister packaging which I also don't have along with the box.

ARTICULATIONS

"You wouldn't shoot an unarmed girl now, do you."
This is an older PAK action figure that's released when SQEX uses hard plastic for the chest parts. You will see older types of articulations in this Deunan PAK figure, so let's check them out.

Staring at the post apocalyptic sun or she see's something flying from afar.
The head is on a double ball peg. It can fully rotate. It can look up really high and down just fine. It can also tilt side to side but you will notice some gapping when you look at it on the side. No neck articulation.

Pointing a gun at the target.
The arms have a disc hinge. They can rotate 360 degrees and raise up sidewards well. The shoulders have the classic butterfly hinges but they have little movement.

Knife wielding.
The bicep can swivel and they're hidden because of the sleeves. The elbows and wrists have ball-hinges that gives them a very nice range of motion.

Assault rifle safety is now off.
The chest can turn and twist side to side. It can go forward and back a little.

CQC stance.
The waist have a very good range of motion, but can be hindered depending on how the legs are posed.

Sprinting to engage the enemy.
The legs can raise forward very well but can go back just a bit. They also have a decent range going up sideways, this figure can pull out very nice kicks.

Crouch shooting.
The knees are double-hinged. The kneepads makes the knees looks good even when you fully bend it.

Laying down on her back to attack the drone from below (movie reference).
The feet have the standard ball-peg. It can raise up and down a bit and can pivot. The boot design limits their movement. Both feet also have a toe hinge.

SCALING

This PAK Deunan figure was released when SQEX is starting to make their future PAK figures bigger just like the MGS figs. I know Deunan is a short woman, so let's compare her height with the rest of my PAK collection

Deunan with random people.
Here you can see Deunan with the rest of the characters from different titles. Lara Croft (RotTR), Harley Quinn (B:AK), Raiden (MGR) and surprisingly, Leon Kennedy (RE6) are all taller than Deunan.

Deunan with the Nomura Variants.
Deunan is the shortest once again in this picture. It looks nice when Deunan is with Batman (Variant) and Catwoman (Variant) but it gets awkward when she's standing side by side with Hatsune Miku (Variant).

Harley and Deunan.
I wanted to include Harley Quinn (Variant) on the previous group shot with the other Variants, but Batman is too wide so not enough space for her to fit in. So anyway, Harley is taller than Deunan, like really tall.

The colorful crew.
Now this is a very nice height comparison for Deunan. Serah (FFXIII) is shorter, Lightning (LR:FFXIII) is a bit taller and Sora (KH3D) and Riku (KH2) are both shorter.

With the Dissidia team.
Deunan is about the same height as Terra (Dissidia). Ligthning (Dissidia) and Squall (Dissidia) are both taller. Another good comparison.

This group pic looks nice.
We're getting back at the awkward height comparison but this group pic is still tolerable. Fran (FFXII) and Gabranth (FFXII) are taller than Deunan.

Deunan looks like a short teenager.
Noctis (FFXV), Lunafreya (FFXV), Cindy (FFXV) and Aranea (FFXV) are all taller than Deunan.

With the FFVII guys (part 1)
It's cool that the tall boys: Vincent (DoC), Sephiroth (FFVII:AC) and Zack (CC:FFVII) are all taller than Deunan. Aerith (CC:FFVII) is also taller than Deunan. I wish Deunan is about the same height as Aerith.

With the FFVII guys (part 2)
Deunan is the shortest on this group photo with Cid (FFVII:AC), Cloud (FFVII:AC), Tifa (FFVII:AC) and Barret (FFVII:AC).

QUALITY ISSUES

I didn't encounter any problems on this figure other than common paint related problems like paint slacks and few splatters. The first owner probably took really good care of this figure.

CONCLUSION

This Play Arts Kai action figure of Deunan is really good. It looks great and cool. Nice articulation and very fun to pose. It got very good amount of accessories that includes three weapons that can all be equipped on the figure. The only downside that I found on this figure is that it's short compared to most figures in my collection. This figure is pretty rare and I got it for a very low price because it's a 2nd hand figure (that's in very good condition). I definitely recommend this because it's a cool PAK action figure. If you want to have her, you gotta have her partner, Briareos too. It doesn't feel right if you have only one of these two characters. I planned to get them both, but when I came back to the 2nd hand toy store, someone bought Briareos and Deunan is left along with the other old toys for sale. This is going to be a tough toy hunt for PAK Briareos.

Action shooting!
Cheers and Happy Collecting!
