[Toy Review] No. 15: Ace Final Fantasy Trading Arts Kai Mini

It's the first day of the year and it's fitting that I review the Trading Arts Kai Mini action figure of a character whose name have the same meaning as the "number one". That character is none other than Ace, a card-wielding Peristylium Suzaku mage student that belongs to Class Zero from a very awesome and epic PSP game, Final Fantasy Type-0. I played and completed the game but it's only in Japanese (not even localized yet). I kinda understand the story a little, and everything I know about the game is enough for me to buy this mini Ace figure. He's also the first character that doesn't belong to any main Final Fantasy games.

PACKAGING

The front and back of the box (sorry for the blurry pics... shaky hands)

50% unpacked
The packaging is a window-type box, where the figure along with the other contents can be seen in front of the box. At the back, we see mini Ace's photos using his different accessories and lots of texts containing warnings and legal stuff. Ace mini figure is number 15 of the series and he belongs to Volume 5 along with Warrior of Light and Zidane Tribal.

A close up of the still sealed mini figure and stand accessories

A bit of advice, there are small parts in this mini figure that got high potential of being lost, plus side is that Ace's accessories is not that really small compared to other accessories the other TAKM figures that I have, still it's better safe than regretting losing the figure's hand or something during the unboxing. Use cutters to remove the display stand and its accessories from the blister packaging, be careful on using cutters!

Everything out of the box... gotta smell that authentic figure smell :D
Packaging includes: Ace mini figure, Ace's Summer Uniform body, 1 extra card-holding right hand, 1 extra left arm with card-holding hand, 3 extra swappable faces, Display stand/base, 3 figure supporters, 3 stand accessory rods, 2 different speech bubbles, 1 unique "square graphic" and a piece of paper with instructions.

THE FIGURE

Viewing mini Ace wearing his Standard Uniform in 4 angles
The figure looks very nice, everything is sculpted well. If you played FFType-0, you'll know that every detail is true and accurate to mini Ace's game counterpart. The paint job is good, since this is a mini figure, I'll tolerate some slack. His face as well as the extra faces, thankfully, looks slightly different than other TAKM figures that I got.

Ace's Summer Uniform. This got a different pose
Mini Ace wears two uniforms, his standard black uniform and his white summer uniform. The summer uniform also looks great, it also got a different pose, let's call this pose "action pose". Oh yeah, the left hand is not moving in this uniform.

ACCESSORIES

Ace lacks accessory variety, all he's got are the extra right hand (for summer uniform) and left arm (for standard uniform) that holds cards and his extra Summer Uniform body. Other accessories (not including the display stand, mounting rods and figure supporters) include 3 swappable faces with different facial expressions, 2 speech bubbles (loud and normal) and the Suzaku logo.

The extra left arm goes with the Standard Uniform
while the right hand is for the Summer Uniform
The extra left arm and right hand holds cards, they look great, but the card faces are blank. They should put some graphics in front of those cards too, also, they should have made other better accessories for Ace, like the "floating cards effect", or that "random card effects" (cards with different glowing color). Square-Enix must level up their creativity since they're turning up the prices for their merchandise.

Those cards can kill
The default face that mini Ace uses is Angry/Serious. The facial expressions of the extra swappable faces/heads for mini Ace are the following: Normal, Sad/Soul-less and faceless (for your creative mind).

Ace face is blank just like the face of his cards
Ace's hair is soft, making it easier to swap faces. To swap faces, remove the head, then separate the hair (2-piece hair) and then attach the face that you want. After doing that, attach the new face (with hair) to Ace's body of your choosing (that sounds awkward...).

He's screaming something that I can't understand
Like always, Ace got the loud and normal speech bubbles with different texts and written in Japanese. I think Ace is screaming at Square-Enix to release FF Type-0 stateside.

I don't understand this expression. It looks sad, soul-less, shy... whatever
That "sad" looking face is confusing. The only scene I saw him sad is at the beginning and at the ending where they're.... oops! Spoilers :D

The Suzaku logo looks like a flag when attached to the longest mounting rod
it's awesome
The unique square graphics for Ace is the Suzaku logo. It's printed so well that the square thing gets a very rough, kinda sandy texture.

It's scary to remove the Standard Uniform's left hand because it's too tight and the arm is so soft that it can snap in two (especially on the "ball jointed" shoulder part) but I managed to swap the left arms without destroying it... phew.

OTHER STUFF TO MENTION

Ace mini figure got some articulation. Ace's head can move pretty well, it can even do a full 360 degree rotation. The Standard Uniform have moving arms, and legs. The Summer uniform have moving arms, legs and right hand. BTW the figure can't stand on its own, so use the display stand.

Oh, I forgot! The Standard Uniform default left arm holds cards permanently.

Getting a little crowded here.
Scaling is tolerable. If depending their height on eye level, Ace is about the same size as WoL and a bit shorter that Lightning and Cloud. Well who cares about that, they're all chibis and they look cute and colorful.

CONCLUSION

In this blog, Ace got the "firsts": He is my first toy review on the first day of the year, his name is first in a standard deck of cards and he is the first spin-off character that got a TAKM figure. Now I'm really expecting a Machina and Rem TAKM figure. Ace figure is great, my only gripe is that he got few moving parts, that's it... and be careful on swapping that tight left arm of his. Like WoL, Ace is a bit expensive than the old TAKM figures, but if you're a TAKM figure collector and completionist, then don't let this pass.

Sorry no mini comics this time, but I got something better :D

Cheers and Happy Collecting!

and...

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
