A movie where the super villains are the heroes. Now that's new, well at least for me. Suicide Squad is the third movie of DC's cinematic universe. This movie is a lot more different than the first two DCCU movies because of its cast of characters and humor.
The story takes place after Batman v Superman, where Superman is "dead". Amanda Waller proposed that they should make a group that will prevent another disaster caused by super powered individuals or stop what will be the next (bad) Superman. So they gathered a handful of bad guys each with their own specialty and they named this group, Task Force X or Suicide Squad as the group learned that they'll die with a push of a button if they disobeyed Waller's or Rick Flag's orders.
The movie is pretty good. I don't know why this movie is being slammed down by critics... conspiracy? There's good balance of humor and seriousness. I really like most of the actors' performance. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is great, she nailed the part. She's funny and full of quips. Deadshot (Will Smith) is great too. I like the scene where he wasted all of the enemy's minions, he kinda resembled Doom Guy there. Joel Kinnaman also did a good job as the leader of the group, Rick Flag. Seeing Rick Flag and Deadshot banter is pretty funny. The Joker (Jared Leto) in this movie is like a mob boss and he's just there to spice things up and throw the team off. He's like Jack Sparrow mixed with Heath Ledger's Joker. He sounded like Heath Ledger's Joker and kinda acts like Jack Sparrow, I think he performed well but I want to see more of him in the next DCCU movie. Now for Amanda Waller, the actress Viola Davis is great in this movie, this is how Amanda Waller should look and act, cold and manipulative.
The other Suicide Squad members, Captain Boomerang played by Jai Courtney, yeah the guy from Terminator: Genesys, is really good. I also didn't recognize him because of his pretty convincing Australian accent and looks. He doesn't do much except for comic relief and minor support. El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) had great moments and the most sane person in the group, he's in-line with Will Smith in this movie when it comes to roles in my opinion. Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje) is a great support character and he got some funny lines, he looks short though. Katana's (Karen Fukuhara) presence in the movie makes her a great character. She may not be one of the Suicide Squad but she's there to help or eliminate the group in-case that they rebel against Flag and Waller. Finally Slipknot (Adam Beach) doesn't have much to do in the movie, but his character has a purpose.
Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) is great. I don't know much about DC's Enchantress but the actress did well to play this role. There are cameos in this movie. Batman (Ben Affleck) helped Amanda Waller to recruit some members to form the Suicide Squad. All characters look great, they're well designed, kudos to the character and costume designers.
The script is well written, easy to understand. It's like this movie fixed the mess in DC's cinematic universe. The characters are introduced with themed effects and transitions while displaying their name, skills and traits. I already know most of the characters here except for El Diablo, Slipknot and Enchantress, the movie did well on introducing the popular and lesser known characters. The backstories for the characters are short and direct to the point. The humor is really good, the characters especially Harley Quinn and Deadshot made me (and most of the audiences) laugh but there are few cringe-worthy scenes too.
Most of the movie scenes takes place on one location, but the environment have variety, you'll feel like you're with the squad while exploring their area of operation as they fight the main villain's minions along the way. There are scenes that I feel they just added in the last minute, like the bar scene. That scene is great BTW and gives some backstory to some characters, making you feel more attached to these villains that's trying to save the world. The fight scenes are awesome, nicely choreographed and no awkward looking parts. The effects are nice and not over-the-top which I really like, but the scene where El Diablo torched the prison inmates looks weird.
I kept this blog spoiler-free so far and I don't intend to add more because I might spill something like who's the main villain and what's next for DCCU. DC is going the right track here, I definitely recommend you to watch this movie because it's really great. I like this movie a lot (Suicide Squad 2 please!) and I will watch it again, this time with friends and so that I'll understand the movie's story more. The next DC movie is Wonder Woman which looks very promising in the trailer. I will watch that movie too.
Cheers!
