He's a passionate, loud big guy that loves his daughter and the planet. His love for the planet is so big that he's using dangerous methods to save it, to the point that his group - Avalanche - is labeled as an eco-terrorist group. He's Barret Wallace from Final Fantasy VII Remake. I got his Play Arts Kai action figure. This one is the newer version 2. The first version is a bit different than this version that I have.
"In my humble opinion, that explosion was a message -
a message to the bastards bleeding our planet dry."

THE FIGURE
Viewing Barret |
This Barret PAK action figure is pretty heavy. The plastic feels dense. As for the looks, Barret looks really awesome.
Sunglasses makes him look more tough. |
The face of this ver. 2 Barret figure looks way better than the ver. 1, which is based on the trailer of the early version of the game developed by CyberConnect2. The face and the head shape of this ver. 2 PAK figure is more accurate to the in-game model of Barret. The shades are translucent but not translucent enought to see Barret's eyes.
Silver earring |
His left ear have a single earring. It's nicely painted.
Barret's facial scars |
The scar on his face is nicely sculpted and paint job is pretty good.
Barret's clothes |
Wow Barret have chest hairs! Anyway, Barret is wearing a brown sleeveless jacket and black tank top underneath. The jacket looks great. It's textured to simulate the canvas or denim feel of the jacket. The jacket also have those pockets and straps. Barret also wears his dog tags. It's either a memento or he's part of a military in the past. The dog tags are sculpted. It would be nice if it's a real chained necklace. The black tank top is half-covered with straps on the abdomen area.
The jacket looks leathery too. |
The back is just plain but still have some detail.
Gun Arm |
Barret's arms are huge, The shoulders and biceps are almost as big as his head. They look really nice and angry. The right arm have his grafted gun arm and is mostly covered by a sleeve. The gun arm looks great. It's metallic in color and also have a blue Materia equipped. The gun barrel rotates, that's really cool attention to detail.
Barret's left arm, his muscles looks hard as stone. |
The left arm shows Barret's huge biceps with a nicely painted flaming skull tattoo. The hand is gloved with metal handguards.
Barret's baggy pants. |
Barret is wearing olive drab colored pants. It got seams and wrinkles for detail.
Back of the pants. |
The back of the pants shows some more details. The pants have a nice paintjob and shadings.
Right pouches. |
Both legs have utility pockets strapped around the thigh area. The right leg have a couple of pouches. The straps and buckles are nicely painted.
Left pouches. |
The left leg have more pouches, two small ones and and a larger one with smaller pouches on its sides.
The boots looks heavy. |
The brown boots are the most simple looking part of Barret's character design and this action figure. But it looks like it got some metal plating on the toes. The buckles are painted silver nicely.
Gotta remove that extra plastic... |
The right boot have an extra plastic mold on the toe articulation.
Underneath the boots. |
The bottom sole is black and got some treads for detail.
ACCESSORIES
The downside of this action figure of Barret is that he only got very few accessories and 99% them are interchangables only. He got his sunglasses as equipment... that's it. For interchangables, he got an interchangeable head with no sunglasses and two extra left hands with one of them is for holding the sunglasses.
Barret's accessories |
That's all of them and it's disappointing. They should have included some muzzle flash effects and I wish the gun arm can be swapped with another gun arm (either ranged or melee weapon) because it's pretty feasible to do that.
Sunglasses |
The shades is the only accessory of Barret. It looks nice and kinda flexible so that it won't break that easily. It got a tab on the left so that it can be attached to the extra hand.
Head without sunglasses. |
The rest of Barret's accessories are interchangeable parts. The shades-less head looks really good just like the default head with shades.
Extra left hands |
Barret only got two extra left hands, one for poses and the other for just holding the sunglasses. The sunglasses holding hand have a hole where you attach the sunglasses.
Looks like spilled ink on his finger. |
The open left hand have some black paint on its pointing finger.
Display stand |
The display stand is just your standard Play Arts Kai stand. Very useful if you want Barret to do some dynamic poses. Even though this Barret figure is on the heavy side, the display stand can hold its weight especially if you tighten the screws.
ARTICULATIONS
"Cloud! Don't you like my sunglasses?" |
Barret is really bulky. Let's see how his articulation works.
"You're puny, a speck." |
Head is on a double ball-peg and it really moves well. The double ball-pegged neck articulation allows the head to have more movement range.
Showing off his gun arm. |
Just like ver.1, the shoulders uses ball-hinges for articulation. Even though the arms are bulky, it can raise forward and to the side really well.
Gun overcharge |
The bicep can swivel. The elbows have ball-hinges and can bend really well.
Shoot to destroy |
The left arm have ball-hinged wrists, no problems on its movement but it's protruding on the gloves.
"You want some of this?" |
Double-ball pegs connects the upper and lower torso. The movement is quite nice and it's hidden, thanks to the straps around the abs. The chest can do ab crunch and bend backwards a bit and turn side to side and tilt left and right just fine.
He's going to punch someone. |
The waist can also do what the upper torso can do. It can turn and tilt left/right a bit and helps the upper torso to ab crunch and bend backward.
Gun intimidation pose. |
The legs can go up forward well enough, can go back a bit. They have trouble raise to the side, especially the left leg, because of the pouches.
Victory pump! |
The knees are double hinged. It's ratcheted and have a really nice bending range. I still don't like the look of the knees when fully bent.
Big guy doing some stealth. |
The feet are ball-hinged. From neutral position, it can point up with 1 click and also down in 1 click. That's really limited. Both feet can pivot and have toe-hinges.
SCALING
Barret is a big guy. Let's see how his height compares with some of my PAK figures.
Double Barret |
Let's compare Barret with future Barret (FFVII:AC) first. AC Barret is a half head shorter than the Remake Barret.
Seeing Barret with Jessie makes me want a Biggs and Wedge PAK figures. |
Barret is the tallest when he's next to Cloud ver. 2 (FFVIIR), Tifa (FFVIIR), Jessie (FFVIIR) and Aerith (FFVIIR).
Tall people crew |
In this picture with the tall people I know in their games, Barret is shorter than Sephiroth (FFVIIR), but he's a bit taller than, Gladiolus (FFXV) Vincent (DoC:FFVII), and Fran (FFXII).
Barret with shorter folks. |
Riku (KH3), Squall (Dissidia), Terra (Dissidia) and Lightning (Dissidia) are puny compared to Barret.
Barret with the ladies. |
Harley Quinn (B:AK), Lara Croft (RotTR), Mature Dress Tifa (FFVIIR) and Kainé (NieR:R) are all shorter than Barret.
QUALITY ISSUES
This action figure is pretty solid. I didn't find any major flaws or anything bad that ruin this figure. But there are a couple, although minor, issues this figure have that should be mentioned.
- Extra mold plastic on the right toe
- Black paint on the open left hand accessory
CONCLUSION
I'm so happy to have another Barret ver.2 Play Arts Kai action figure in my collection. This figure is looks really good, it's big, bulky and can pose (although some parts have limited movement). My only gripe is the lack of accessories. This figure is pretty expensive but I got this with a discount so that's good. My Final Fantasy VII Remake party is almost complete.
Cheers and Happy Collecting!
More Barret!
Something that I discovered through my own figure is that the gatling part of the gun arm can be rotated to a certain point. No idea if it was intended, but it was fun to see!
ReplyDeleteThis figure was also the first time my mom saw what Barret actually looked like. She had only seen the sitting plush before.
Yes, I forgot to mention that in the review. Thanks for pointing that out.
DeleteThe gun barrel doesn't fully rotate. It kinda ruins the fun and playability aspect a bit. I wish it can rotate in full 360.
